Live your best life

To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and
refinement rather fashion; to be worthy, not respectable; and wealthy, not rich;

AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!

THAT was exactly how I felt this morning after my phonecall was rudely ended by a grumpy menopausal WOMAN on the other end of the line !!

In order for you to have a clearer picture of this I need take you back to a conversation I had with Robert which led me into making that "fateful" telephone call. He expressed some concern about me being at home 24/7 since resigning from my job (i.e. not meeting anybody, not having any friends = no other human contact apart from him and my in laws etc.) After a brief reassurance from me he seemed to have accepted my explanation and decision of not returning to work for the time being. However I could still feel that he was not convinced enough. So I thought maybe the answer is to consider looking at doing some voluntary work instead as that will get me out of the house for a few hours which will please him and as it is voluntary expectation of my performance wouldn't be too high (I hope).

Initially I wasn't sure what I could do or where to look for volunteer work apart from physically knocking on every local charity shop in the village. However I soon realised how vast the data on the internet is as after only a few minutes of browsing, I found a couple of websites with lists and lists of any type of voluntary work you find.

So armed with that information we talked about it over our morning coffee and (surprisingly) he was very supportive. He suggested the RSPCA as I had expressed an interest earlier on in the year while we were at their show that I wouldn't mind helping out in the kennels. So we researched a little bit further into it and found that they are advertising for volunteers to walk their dogs. I will need to attend a few classes before I will be accepted of course but I thought there and then "Great! ". However as the job involves working with cats and dogs there would be quite a good chance that I may get bitten or scratched. And as a health and safety guideline (in the UK) I will need to show them that my tetanus injection is still within date . Who knows, maybe, in case my arm falls off I cannot sue them as they have taken every precaution! LOL!

Luckily (well I said luckily as I have got a scar now) I had that injection when I cut my foot earlier in July but I need to have some paperwork to say that I had that done. So I phoned my doctor's office to try to find how do I go about getting that, but instead of speaking to the doctor I was put through to one of the secretaries instead, I always do - "speak to the doctor, no he is far too busy to speak to you". I thought "Oh no, I know how well this is going to turn out!" as I have never ever had a good experience liaising with any of those women there so why should this time be any different. Lo and behold, I had to explain my dilemma to a "dragon" (believe me, this is a "nice" description of her) who was the least interested in whatever I had to say. I was then put on hold twice before I heard a big KLUNK (!!) and the line was cut off !!! Let me stress that all that time when I was given very rude and abrupt answers to my questions, I, on the other hand, held on very well and remained calm and good natured throughout. And what did she do - she cut me off !!! Oooooh was I MAD !!! I was livid to say the least !! If I could reach down the phone her neck would have been broken in few pieces!!

I decided that I had to cool off before calling them again to avoid getting into an argument over the phone. The second time however I did manage to speak to my doctor's secretary and I must say, she was a breath of fresh air !!. She was really nice and polite to me . On top of that she said that I can have the paperwork within 2 to 3 days time! However that is meant to be seen yet

For the time being - it's FANTASTIC!

THE "TREE"

This sad looking "thing" (I call it a tree as it's about 8 feet tall) has been "sitting" in a pot in a corner of our lounge looking sad for itself for the pass months. So I thought I will give it a bit of tender loving care i.e. a trim here and a tidy up there in order to revive it a bit.

It took me a few hours and I was glad that it was beginning to look quite good. So I continued to untie all the stems away from the pole to see which ones needed to be trimmed down, i.e. the bare and dried up stems etc., to make it look a bit more lush and green. Well that was the idea, anyway.

Unfortunately it was a lot more unhealthy than I first thought !!! The more I untied the more less leaves it had on!! In the end all that was left was a bare pole!!! Basically it was a massacre!! A tree no more!!

Well, then I thought "Now what ??"

Out hunting we went to the garden centres looking for another plant which hopefully will get to the same height given a few years time - that is of course, if I hadn't kill it by then !!

So this is it here - all lush and green. Its called a Yucca. Robert had one during his bachelor days and according to him it is very easy to grow - that we will see in the later months - wait till it has the "Waine" therapy ! LOL! We got this at a bargain - that is my theory anyway. It is about 4 feet tall and it had a £10 price label on it. We saw a few other (totally similar) ones with a different price - £24.99 (!!) Initially we thought there must be something wrong with the lower priced ones or else why were they more than half priced and it wasn't like there was a sale on at that moment. Well. we couldn't see anything different. My thinking is someone has been mistakenly priced them as while we were queueing up to pay I saw much smaller plants with a £10 price label on them !

HAPPY DAYS !!

What a mess !!

This was given to us by our very good friends before they emigrated to Singapore to work about 3-4 years ago. It has been unwell for a few months and nothing I do seems to please it anymore. So today I decided to take a few hours off my project to try to give it a face lift.

Who knows - we may end up with nothing !!!

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Told myself that I am not going to shop but gone into Primark and saw these !!

New Project!!!!

This is the new project I have started on. Its a (rough) sketch of a melon. When we were in France there were fields and fields of them out there. Sarah asked if I can paint one for her - her birthday present for herself. That reminds me I need to reply her e-mail as she doesn't know that I intend to do it. If she still wants me to paint it for her we will then decide on the size.

At least my fingers are less "itchy" since they have been kept busy.

I am very excited about this and willl keep you posted of course!

A year since ........

......I left the rat race.

Since I have so much time on my hands nowadays I have been doing a lot of soul searching (unintentionally of course!) I don't know why but at my age? My sentiment exactly! What I had as a job was not what I would call a career nor one that I would choose to be in either . It was what I had to do to pay the bills when you are the eldest in a family full of financial restraints. I was never asked about what my amibition was, let alone any advice was given as to which profession would benefit me for life. I had to take what was given. The first job that landed on my lap was as a receptionist in a legal firm. It was good to begin with and was learning something new every day but as time went on all that slowly trickled away. Though I am proud to say that I've worked up the ranks through those 25 years but it was hardly easy as I had to put up with a lot bullying and a lot of "kow towing" in fear of being dismissed for insubordination if I dared question anything.

Now as I am getting restless with the time on my hands I am thinking I need to focus on something new again. I need to look for something to do with my time but the question of what kind of work would I want to go into is still unanswered. THAT itself is a big question. People say if you enjoy what you do you wouldn’t describe it as work. Now I know what I enjoy doing but that ain’t gonna bring in moneyll So I am back to looking at what there are out there for me – which I am capable of doing and all I can see are clerical/admin stuff which spells out LOUD and CLEAR “NOT MY CUP OF TEA" . So here I am finding myself going round and round in circles !!! I don’t want to go back to their so called “rat race” . So what if you win you are still a rat at the end of day !! Is this what having a mid life crisis feels like I wonder ?

Useless information about me

Have you come across those "25 things about me" listing....
I think that it's a bit tacky, but it does have an interesting perspective of knowing a person.
And so, I decided to be tacky today!
but, I might not just do 25, my list will be loooooonng......
Not sure how long, but it will be for I AM AN INTERESTING PERSON........

voila.......

1. I love languages
My ultimate dreams would be to teach my kids a few languages, I love language not just for communication alone but also the living culture, wisdom behind it. From the experience of English and Chinese, it's 2 diffferent paradigm of wisdom with life, both fantastic and life enriching. I want to do Japanese & French as a start.

2. I do half make up without lipsticks
Most people I have seen, would be putting on lipstick as make up quicky. I am quite the opposite that brows and blusher is the basic of looking good. Off the record, I often ended up eating the lipstick half an hour after I put it on.

3. I like colourful things
I love colours, no particular one but all blends together. Don't you feel merrier when you see colours all blend-in like in the circus or carnival, vaudeville like is my favourite. I particularly like those.

4. I like to reminiscence
Remembering a certain past moments makes me cherish life, flash back at the moment is watching twilight zone curling up next to mum and bro.

5. I have poetic view for life
I believes everything happens for a reason, and whatever tragedy happens, I'll asssociate some beautiful philosophical meaning with it.

6. I'm forgetful person
I forget easily, that's why I keep a book where I list down what to do when I really wants to get things done.

7. I'm forgiving person
I always gives people benefit of doubt, never can hate a person. I'll be angry, but always interpret any incident with benefit of doubt for the other party.

8. I like oldies
Sometimes, I wonder whether I am 90's teenager, because it will always be the 80's and early 90's movies and songs that pops up in my mind. Movies would be Terminator, Gremlins, Mannequin, ET, Back To Future, Never Ending Stories, ; Series would be Macguyver, A Team, Knight Rider, Love Boat, Cheers, Dynasty, Growing Pains, Doogie Howser, Murphy Brown;Songs would be MC Hammer, New Kids On the Block, Debbie Gibson, Kylie Minougue (circa Locomotion), Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie.None of the friend my age could relate to it. I wonder where they come from.....

9. I love Art
Any form of it, I like to discover the underlying emotion. It's magical, other than language, I think art is a kind of communication that goes beyond the barrier of anything. It's a connection from the creator to others. Other than the conventional music, movie, paintings, I like perfomance art, not restricted to stage performance, like flashmob.

10. I'm resilient to pain physically
I discover it when my friend pass me a scissors and it went into my flesh, I didn't really feel anything but just tiny sting. And, I recall I usually cry because I'm emotionally painful rather than physically hurt.

10. I believes in science but I'm not an atheist
I like science subject the most during primary school, I remembered I always asked the most question. And, I thought then one day science would explain about God. I'm just not any average kid.

12. I love trivia
You thought trivia is trivial, it is not quite 100% so. It is fun fact, a conversational material, sometimes it would change your perception.

13. I'm avid reader of wikipedia
As I loves trivia, this is the big pool of it, I like to read biography, history of an incident, industrial jargon. I read also to accumulate materials for stories I want to write later on in life.

14. I love life, and appreciate it very much
I think it is pretty random that the tiniest cell meets the biggest cell to produce life. It is precious to have these senses to experience life, I'm grateful from every breath I take to every thought I made.

15. I'm half deaf
If I don't pay FULL attention, I couldn't collect the exact words people say, I think I'm half deaf. So, I never could eavesdrop.

16. I have extremely short span of attention
I really have to pay FULL attention, really making an effort to be focus, and its tiring. I tried everytime, usually it last not more than 15 minutes before my mind flew to India.Especially when someone speaks English, it takes double the effort. I'm still working on this though.

17. I express myself better in Chinese
I could express myself gracefully in Chinese, and I'm able to impressed because I have the right tone and expression. Half of the time, people find me sound and look funny when I uses English for communication. I couldn't get the tone right which frustrated me very badly. I have been watching a lot of English series lately, then I got reminded of the Aussie tone, American tone and English tone. OK, I'll just stick to Malaysian tone, and still frustrated.

18. My best childhood friend is my brother
I wasn't allow to be outdoor most of the time as cases of child abduction happened a lot when I was a kid. So, before 10, my brother is my best friend because I switched school too often to keep a circle of friends at school. Anyway, I still thinks that he is cool till today, and, I still follow whatever he does like Jade follows Jane. Silly, I know....

19. I love kids and I think I could relate to their play mind
I think a part of me still a 9 year old, I'm able to do whatever I want now which I'm not able to when I was 9, so Jane and Jade made really good playmates, I'm re-living a happy time through introducing new games and tricks to them.

20. I'm re-living my childhood, teenage and 20's now
Not only re-living my childhood, I'm re-living my teenage years through collecting songs, reading trivia on wiki, coming up ideas for projects, I think I'm going to live my twenties in next 2 years.

21. I keep a bucket list
Those on the list are santorini, cirque du soleil, painting self potrait, write a story.......

22. I love designing
I want to make accesories and home decoration item.

23. I love paper work
I want to make pop-up card, paper doll, chinese paper cutting and boxes with lovely print design by me, probably have a business of paper product.

24. I love sewing
I want to do embroidery on my dress, on my pillow, on my bag, on my hat, on my table cloth......

25. I procrastinate very badly
But, I procrstinate very badly, I move in slow motion, and slime on couch on weekend. I, I, I'll......change, try....to change......

26. I love the idea of bubble bath
If only I could afford bathroom renovation.......

27. I want to learn to appreciate red wine
I never got drunk.......this should be on my bucket list. And, I want to learn how to appreaciate red wine. And, err......I have a chart of wine tasting visualization to help me. Freaky, I know......

I was thinking about how much you used to enjoy watching Smurfs cartoons when you were a kid and since you probably have got more experience in them than I have - here's a question for you :-

If you choke a Smurf what colour does it turn ????

That summer feeling.........

The warm weather we had in June is now slowly fading in my memory as more rain is forecast for the oncoming days ahead. It has been a "bad" summer for gardeners as it started too hot and dry when the vege plot needed it the most which has now affected a lot of them with a result of very low yield of fruits.

We dug up our potatoes the other day and have never had such a pathetic harvest of it! Only 3-4 kg (!!) not worth the hard work that we put in - well, hubby's hard work this time as I didn't plant them in this year as you probably know - I was galavanting away in Malaysia! Blame it on acts of God - the volcanic ash in Iceland, to be exact and as I didn't managed to come home in time so he had to put them in. :) !!

Anyway, our raspberries are also having the same effect. Most of it eaten by birds/squirrels and also a few of them were broken off at the top as those big fat pigeons were seen sitting on them while pecking them off !! I counted 10 were broken the other day and all had good bunches of unripen berries on them too. Having said that we still managed to harvest about 6 - 8 kgs so far with half of that already been made into jam for this year. Pic above shows the jam being cooked before it was put in jars - about 14 of them!!. I hope I shall continue to pick them until the first frost and keep these back for tarts and maybe I will have a go at making some ice cream later in the year - maybe ? - I can try anyway.

We had given up on planting tomatoes for about 2-3 years when we had a very bad attack of what they called over here as the tomato blight - basically the stems and leaves go black and then the unripen fruits will get affected too which left us with nothing in the end. Well, this year my neighbour gave us 20 tomatoes seedlings as he planted too many of them and didn't want them to go to waste. We thought we give them another chance and see how it goes. So far I pulled up one of them as I thought it was showing some early signs of the same damage but (at the moment) the rest seems to be ok. Having said that I am still not too sure about a couple of them but as there are quite a good bunch of tomatoes on them and they seemed to be ripening I have left it. Judging from the above pictures we may be very lucky this year but fingers crossed!!

We had a late - very late - and small - very small - crop of radishes, just three of them in fact !! They are very spicy though nothing like the ones that we get from Tesco which were probably picked a week before they got to the supermarket.

As for our carrots, they seem to be doing pretty well. Last year we had a very good crop but as we had to go on our holiday we gave it all to my father in law which he said was very nice :)! We tried some the other day and they were indeed very fragrant and sweet. We normally save them for our salad instead of cooking them in order to get the real taste of it.

As you can see they are of all sizes and of all weird shapes and knobs !!

We have a very good sowing of beans this year - all 16 of them which went in the ground. They started off very healthy and seemed to have an abundant of flowers which beans will form when they are polinated. Unfortunately again I was told is probably due to the hot weather very few of them got polinated and I kept finding the dried blooms on the ground with nothing left on the stalk.

This is what we pick every other day compared to four times of that EVERYDAY last year! Another failure there !!

Just as well we are not relying on all these to survive as we will probably not have any vegetable to eat ! Hehehe!!

Better luck next year then !!

ENCORE EN FRANCE !!!!

We had another good holiday in France but this time we took my father in law with us. Robert helped with his brother laying the patio around the pool (first picture above) which took them 2 days and even then they had only managed to finish 3/4 of it ! It was really hot - too hot for those ang mohs really, to be out under the glaring sun with 28 degress celcius, especially for Robert - he was melting - literally, so not a good sight at all. Ha ha ha ! We didn't do much sight seeing this time around as we have already been to most of the tourists sites out there. However as we decided to abandon the "building" project we thought we would drop by one of the local parks i.e. with a landscaped lawn and gardens and an orchard with loads of fruits and berries especially raspberries, plums etc. I also came across which I think looked like a hibiscus bush (see picture below) I have never seen hibiscus blooms that big before and as it was the same colour as my capri pants (hehehe!!) Sarah said I should take a picture with it! Oh oh I think I need a haircut !!

Peter and Sarah's neighbour brought in 6 melons (!!) that she picked from the local fields near their villa. If you look at the first picture again you will see a big tree (walnut tree) on the other side of the pool and just about 2 meters from there are their neighbour's fields. This year they grown hay in those fields but last year crop was sunflowers which, as you can probably imagine the scenery then, looking out from the kitchen, must have been breathtaking!! (I guess that was how Van Gogh got his inspiration from !! ) Next year's crop will be melons. Her neighbour works in a local melon factory which harvests those fields and they tasted as sweet as nectar honey and, as a guess, I suspect that was due to them being ripened on the fields instead on transit to whichever country that they might be exporting to! (as a guess probably including UK asI have since been proven right !) The local peaches were yummy too and again they are so juicy as they were propably ripened on the tree itself - well, as they say, you win some you lose some !

I think I should give you a "tour" of their house by now - well I can try anyway from the pictures above. The second picture is the front view of the house; the opened front door takes you to the hallway [which leads you to the dining room on the left (which leads to the kitchen, and then to the swimming pool) and on the right of the hallway leads you to the lounge (the 3rd picture above shows the outside of that part of the house). There's a staircase which takes you to the three bedrooms, two with on-suite bathrooms and there is also a family bathroom upstairs too. There is an opened fire place (4 times the size of ours !!) on one end of the lounge with two big doors on each side and another one opens out onto the covered porch area where there is a purpose built-in barbecue, as shown in the 4th picture. You can see the roof covering the gravelled (stoney) porch area where the brown coloured bricked top of the barbecue is "peeking out" from behind of the bamboo on the right hand corner of the pic. You can also see the lake on the left of the picture which is their neighbour's. The garden/lawn area surrounding their house/villa (which they also own) is about 1 1/2 acres. Sarah has planted plums, walnuts and pears and she hopes to be able to harvest them in a few years time.

Although it was really hot out there the pool was far too cold for us to swim in unfortunately. The temperature gauge was only showing 21 degrees - way tooo cold for me !! Robert didn't go in either this time around. Maybe another time but probably not ever again, reason being the villa may be rented out to tourists next summer. No doubt they will as it is a lovely holiday villa but I don't think we will be able to afford the rent!

Au revoir France ........ pour le moment !! A la prochaine!

Chook in a bag !!!!

One of the British traditions is their roast dinners - cooked particularly on a Sunday. This would be their main meal at lunchtime and it can be a leg of lamb, beef or a whole chicken and of course a nut roast if you are a vegetarian. These would traditionally be accompanied by Roast Potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding [no, not a sweet pudding desert but very crispy and savoury round batter (in the opposite picture) cooked in a very hot oven] followed by some stuffing and a bit of gravy.

Last Sunday I decided to roast my chicken in a bag, not your household run of the mill normal plastic bags - bags which are oven proofed!! I have seen supermarkets selling prepared chicken (i.e. seasoned or stuffed) in a bag to be roasted in the oven. I thought I will give it a go myself and see how it turns out. If I were to roast a chicken in a normal way I would have a basting mixture for my chicken made up of chopped two sprigs of rosemary (from my garden), two cloves of garlic crushed or finely chopped and two tablespoon of butter. All these are mixed up with a bit of salt to take the taste a little bit further. As I have decided to keep things simple I will use the same basting combination for this roast too.

By "stuffing" my basting mixture between the skin and breasts of the chicken it will, not only flavours the breast meat but it will also keep them moist. I then loosened the skin with the back of my spoon pushed in towards the top of chicken on both sides of the breasts. I needed to be careful not to break the skin or else all the juices of the bird would have leaked out during cooking thus not doing what it is supposed to do so I needed to concentrate on pushing my spoon downwards towards the meat when I was pushing it upwards towards the top of the bird.

As illustrated from the pics below(in first picture), the basting mixture was then spooned in and then carefully pushed towards the top of the bird, with my fingers, (in the second picture) to distribute it evenly over the meat of the bird. The remainder of the mixture was then spread on to the legs and wings (in the third picture) and lastly what's was left, if any, over the top of the bird too . In the fourth picture you can see that I have dusted some flour over it to (hopefully) keep the bird from sticking to the bag. I then placed the bird in the bag (pic 5) , tied the bag up tightly and then slashed the top of the bag with a sharp knife - three times - to let only some of the air out while it was cooking but not too much as the steam created in there would also help keep the meat moist. Place it in a baking tray big enough to hold it with the ends of the bag tucked in it . It was then roasted in a reheated hot oven Gas Mark 5 (about 180 celcius) for about 2 hours. It came out nicely roasted and golden ! The meat was flavoursome and moist - the meat was falling off the bones - it was that moist !! I think I shall be trying this out again !!! Yummy !!

Wonders of the human anatomy...

We were invited to two drinks parties organised by my brother in law's friends and we walked there on both occasions instead of taking the car so that everyone can enjoy and have a few drinks. Had a couple of days of difficulty in walking as the top of the sandals were pressing onto the cut. Luckily it got a lot better by Sunday and I managed to try out their newly built pool. The weather there was really warm - 28 celcius !! Thought I would cool off in the pool thinking the 26 degrees shown on the pool thermometer would be ok. I was wrong ! We were only in there for 1/2 hour and I couldn't get out any quicker!! At least I can now say that I had been in.

Their house (I would say mansion!) is half finished. The fittings in there are of very good quality. Their lounge has a HUGE fireplace and is as big as Kit's 2 lounges put together. On top of that will be the master bedroom with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the fields and lake in front of thier house. When it is finally finished they intend to rent it out during the summer and I think they are aiming for the rich - looking at what they have done so far.

The pic above shows the kitchen looking out onto the pool and the vast expense of agricultural land. The fields just next to their pool are owned by their french neighbour and they had wheat grown in there this year. Last year was sunflowers and from the pics below you can see that the view was breathtaking!!

Silly me!!

Yesterday (after trying to call you) I decided to pack for our long weekend trip to France this Friday, to visit my brother in law. Half way through that I was distracted by my rumbling tummy so I went down to the kitchen to start fixing myself some lunch. I opened my kitchen cabinet door to take a saucepan out to boil a couple of eggs for my egg sandwich and then everything was quite a blur after that as all of it happened in a split second !! I felt a thud on the top of my left foot and looked down and a pyrex dish was in pieces on top of it. I could also see a deep laceration and there and then I thought "oh no I need a plaster now !" I then stepped back to get one and immediately felt a sharp pain on the bottom of my other foot, looked at it and saw a small piece of glass poking out of it and thought " *# + !!" . Pulled that out and it started bleeding! By this time the deep cut on my other foot was bleeding quite a bit too !! Then I said "Sh#*!! Not now!" thinking I have got a plane to catch in about 4 days time! Then I rang Robert at work to tell what had happened and he suggested that I get an ambulance while he was driving back home. The ambulance got here very quickly and I was then taken up to the A & E of the local hospital with my foot temporarily bandaged. Robert met me there and it was not until about 2 1/2 half hours later that I was seen. Came home with a bandaged sore foot and sore arm (!!) as I had to have a tetanus injection for the cut and still no lunch yet (that includes Robert too !) LOL !

Anyway, we had a chinese take away for dinner instead so that cured our hunger straightaway. My foot was quite sore last night in bed but I am glad that this morning it's beginning to feel a lot better and hopefully it will heal up by the time I get to the airport on Friday! However I don't think I can test their new swimming pool though :( !! which would be a real shame as I was really looking forward to that. Still I am not going to complain considering how bad it could have gone the other way!

Tiny Tomatoes !!

Well - tiny for now - hopefully they will be big and juicy. Having said that some of them are supposedly cherry tomatoes as well. Will keep you posted!

This year we are very lucky to have been given about 20 tomato plants. In the past we hadn't been having any success with growing them because we keep getting the tomato blight which the leaves will blacken and then followed by the fruits before they were ripe! So hopefully we will have better luck this year.

These plants were given to us by my neighbour (aged 81 !!) and my father in law (aged 85 !!) who are still very keen gardeners. I hope I will still be as active as they are when I get to that age let alone digging over my veggie patch!!

BEANS AND MORE BEANS!!

As promised close up photos of the runner beans ...... You can see their blooms are bright red, very pretty and a bean is emerging from one of them after having been pollinated.

These purple ones are a different variety - the green bean there will turn dark purple as it gets bigger but when it is cooked it turns green again !!

All of them will grow to about one foot long !! Will upload pics of them when they get to that size.
